UPS orders 27 Boeing 767-300ER freighters

UPS orders 27 Boeing 767-300ER freighters UPS said it has ordered 27 Boeing 767-300 Extended Range freighters for delivery between 2009 and 2012 at an undisclosed amount. The planes are to support the Atlanta-based company's growing worldwide delivery network and demand for package and freight services.
The move comes at the same time the world's largest parcel carrier is reviewing its previous order for 10 A380 superjumbo jet freighters, after production delays for the new aircraft forced Airbus to postpone customer deliveries by at least two years. UPS said the Boeing order is not related to the Airbus situation and that no decision has been made on whether to maintain or cancel the order. UPS plans to use the A380s on long-haul routes currently served by MD-11 and 747 freighters.
In November, FedEx cancelled its order for 10 Airbus A380s and placed an order with rival Boeing for 15 777 freighters, with an option for 15 more aircraft.
The 767-300ER freighter has a maximum payload of 132,200 pounds and a range of 3,000 nautical miles.
'The Boeing 767-300ER freighter already is part of our current air fleet and we know from experience what a great workhorse it is,' said Bob Lekites, UPS's vice president for airline and international operations.
'It's also a good answer to our fleet management needs because it provides great flexibility, fast time in transit and sound cost performance. In addition, we already have the pilot training, ground support and maintenance systems in place, making for a seamless integration.'
