Mitsui to develop commercial vessel monitoring system

The ocean liner MOL and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding will jointly create a system to analyze short cycle data and big data from vessels for commercialization.    Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) will work with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. (MES) to develop a vessel monitoring and support system for commercialization.
   The system will be based on real time data acquired by units developed by MES and will analyze short cycle data as well as big data.
   The joint effort is to enable MOL to “achieve the ‘prevention of marine incidents’, the ‘prevention of equipment failure’, and ‘optimized vessel routing’ through the integration of ICT related components such as AI (artificial intelligence),” said the ocean liner. 
   Last month the two companies were chosen to participate in the autonomous ocean transport system R&D project via Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) for its fiscal year 2017 Transportation Research and Technology Promotion Program.
   The purpose of this project is to establish road maps toward autonomous vessels, which is expected to deliver safer and more efficient marine transportation, according to MOL.
