APM Terminals stopping work for safety All of APM Terminals’ sites around the globe will stop operations today for 30 minutes as part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk unit’s Global Safety Day.
   Workers will use the down time to discuss the safety issues at each terminal, the Hague, Netherlands-based company said.
   'Container terminals are dangerous places to work and it is in everyone's interest to ensure we have safe working environments,” said APM Chief Executive Officer Kim Fejfer.
   Henrik Kristensen, APM’s director of health, safety, security and environment, said: 'The purpose of this initiative is to get every employee engaged — it is a joint effort and we have the responsibility for the safety of each other. We continue to emphasize the need to focus on proactive initiatives as well as to address accidents.”
   APM operates more than 50 terminals worldwide, including terminals in Port Elizabeth, Portsmouth and Virginia. In 2006 it handled 28.4 million TEUs, giving it a 6.4 percent market share.
