   Joseph C. Curto was made president of New York Shipping Association Inc., effective Monday.
   Curto served as president of Maher Terminals LLC since 2007 where he has held a variety of jobs since joining the company in 1972. He began his career in 1970, working for United States Lines.

   Curto replaces Frank McDonough who informed the NYSA board earlier this year of his intention to retire. McDonough was president of the group since December 2001.
   NYSA comprises ocean cargo carriers, terminal operators, stevedores, and marine-related businesses in the New York area.
   Last week the association released a study it commissioned from A. Strauss-Wieder Inc., of Westfield, N.J. that said about 269,990 jobs are generated by activity in the Port of New York and New Jersey, up one-third since 2004, the last time a similar analysis was conducted.
   'The results of this study make it very clear that the maritime industry continues to play a critical role in the business of this region,' McDonough said.
