RailAmerica’s June carloads drop 2.5%

RailAmerica’s June carloads drop 2.5%    RailAmerica Inc., a holding company for 42 short-line railroads operating on about 7,800 track miles in the United States and Canada, said its freight carloads dropped 2.5 percent in June to 102,824 from 105,429 in the same month last year.
   “The company’s railroads had decreased shipments in June 2006 in 10 out of 14 commodity groups. The decrease relates primarily to lower shipments of paper products, petroleum products, and lumber and forest products, partially offset by increases in coal and agricultural and farm products,” RailAmerica said.
   After six months, RailAmerica’s total carloads are down 2.7 percent to 638,932 from 656,948 in the same period 2005.
