The “Safmarine Nimba” was built by the German shipyard Volkswerft Stralsund, a sister company of Safmarine within the A.P. Moller-Maersk conglomerate.
The geared ship is designed to accommodate the length and draft restrictions of West African ports. It has a draft of 11 meters (36 feet) and a length of 195.5 meters (641 feet).
Safmarine said its investment in the three new vessels underlines its commitment to the Europe/West Africa trade, in which goods such as machinery, motor vehicles, industrial chemicals, vegetable oils, fertilizers and white goods are expected to be shipped south from Europe to West Africa. Return journey cargo is likely to include commodities such as cocoa and coffee beans, cotton, timber and rubber.
