A.P. Moller names “Georg Maersk”
A.P. Moller-Maersk Saturday named the last in a series of six “S-class” post-Panamax containerships at the group’s Odense shipyard in Denmark. The “Georg Maersk,” like its sisterships has an overall length of 367 meters (1,204 feet) and breadth of 42.8 meters (140 feet) with a deadweight of 115,700 tons. Its 12-cylinder W'rtsil' RT-flex diesel engine from Doosan
Engine Co. produces 93,000 bhp, giving a service speed of 25 knots.
The S-class ships have a declared capacity of 7,000 TEUs, but are believed to have a nominal capacity closer to 10,200 TEUs as their dimensions are larger than those of the current largest declared ship, the 9,449-TEU “COSCO Guangzhou” which has a length of 350 meters (1,150 feet), a breadth of 42.8 meters (141 feet) and deadweight of 107,277 tons.
The rise of the mega-containerships is set to continue as Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) said in September it is accepting orders for 13,000-TEU vessels. These behemoths will have a production period of nine to 10 months, although deliveries will not be possible before 2009, owing to HHI’s current workload.
