CSX invests in Louisville intermodal terminal

CSX invests in Louisville intermodal terminal    Class I railroad CSX last week said its Intermodal Terminals subsidiary is building a $15 million, 34-acre container transfer center in Louisville, Ky., that will be operational by early 2012.
   The Jacksonville, Fla.-based rail carrier said the Louisville facility would connect with its new Northwest Ohio intermodal hub, enabling access to the rest of its eastern network and beyond.
   CSX Intermodal Terminals will employ a dozen people to operate the new terminal, which lies between CSX's Osborne Yard and the Louisville Industrial Center near Louisville International Airport.
   The project includes the installation of new track, pavement, drainage, inbound and outbound gates, and refurbishment of two buildings for use as offices.
   Intermodal business, which consists of consumer goods shipped in domestic truck trailers or containers, and international containers loaded with imports and exports, has been a steady growth area for companies such as CSX. Railroads have been investing heavily to expand their service reach and reliability.
