Pacer transfers Los Angeles cartage unit to Pacer Stacktrain

Pacer transfers Los Angeles cartage unit to Pacer Stacktrain    Pacer International, a provider of transportation and logistics services, said it has transferred its cartage operation in Los Angeles to Pacer Stacktrain, its wholesale division.
The company said Bob Arovas will continue as president of its cartage unit, and will report to Tom Shurstad, president of Pacer Stacktrain.
Pacer’s cartage operations had been part of Pacer Global Logistics. Cartage, or drayage, refers to the local pickup and delivery of freight by truck.
Pacer Stacktrain provides stacktrain, local trucking, retail intermodal marketing, and warehousing and distribution operations.
“Our objective in shifting the cartage unit to the wholesale division is to better align the cartage unit’s products with the product portfolio offered by Pacer Stacktrain,” said Don Orris, chairman and chief executive officer of Pacer International.
Overall, Pacer’s cartage capability comprises 600 trucks, predominantly owner-operator units, making 300,000 local moves annually from terminals in 17 U.S. cities.
Pacer’s intermodal marketing customers, who package “a large proportion of door-to-door moves … can directly access these cartage capabilities through the wholesale channel,” Orris explained.
Pacer International and Pacer Stacktrain are based in Concord, Calif. Pacer Global Logistics has its main office in Dublin, Ohio.
