SDDC mobile port operation set up in Haiti    The U.S. Surface Deployment and Distribution Command has set up a mobile port operations center in Haiti to oversee sustainment shipments for the American peacekeepers recently deployed to the civil war ravaged Caribbean island.
   The SDDC’s mobile logistics unit in Haiti is mounted on two high-mobility, multipurpose wheeled vehicles, and includes communications equipment, power sources, shelter and tent to support the SDDC transporters.
   “The mobile port operating center is designed especially to support small-scale, short duration contingency operations or operations at secondary ports,” said Lt. J.G. Danielle Lloyd of the SDDC’s Information Management Special Projects Team in Alexandria, Va., in a statement.
   According to the SDDC (formerly the Military Traffic Management Command), this is the first time one of these mobile logistics units has been used in the U.S. southern command area.
   In addition, the SDDC Operations Center at Fort Eustis, Va., issued a modification to its Universal Services Contract No. 4 so that U.S.-flag commercial vessel operator Crowley Maritime Corp. can provide SDDC with liner services to Haiti. Containers for the operation will be provided by Textainer of Hackensack, N.J.
