Defense merging information systems for air, water cargo    The U.S. Defense Department’s transportation management information systems are consolidating aerial and surface port management system.
   The Global Air Transportation Execution System (GATES), managed at Air Mobility Command, supports air mobility operations by managing global air passenger and cargo data.
   The Worldwide Port System (WPS), operated by the Army’s Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, manages import and export of military cargo at sea ports worldwide.
   Following an extensive study conducted by U.S. Transportation Command, GATES was selected as the system to host combined aerial and surface port functionality. The GATES/WPS convergence began in June 2006 and full operational capability of the converged systems is scheduled to be delivered in fiscal year 2009.
