Panama, like most countries, closed its border to U.S. cattle and beef products in December 2003 when the USDA confirmed that an imported Canadian cow in Washington state had bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or “mad cow” disease.
Since then, Panama has reopened its borders to U.S. beef imports.
In May 2007, the World Organization for Animal Health formally classified the United States as a controlled risk country for BSE. This status confirms that the U.S. regulatory controls are effective and that U.S. cattle can be safely traded.
