Four more U.K. ports join CBP’s Container Security Initiative

Four more U.K. ports join CBP’s Container Security Initiative    U.S. Customs and Border Protection said four more U.K. ports have joined a program to improve ocean container security.
   The ports of Liverpool, Southampton, Thamesport and Tilbury are testing with CBP’s Container Security Initiative and will fully implement the program by Nov. 1. CBP started the program with overseas ports in January 2002 to prevent high-risk containers from reaching American ports.
   U.K. Customs signed a CSI declaration of principles with CBP Dec. 9, 2002. Felixstowe became CSI operational May 24, 2003. CBP deployed a team of CBP officers to the port of Felixstowe. CBP officers work side-by-side with U.K. Customs officers to detect high-risk containers before they’re loaded on U.S.-bound vessels.
   CSI is operational in 30 ports in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The World Customs Organization and the Group of Eight support CSI expansion through their adoption of resolutions that support the implementation of international supply chain security measures.
