Hamburg airport begins work on new air cargo terminal

   Hamburg Airport on Monday began construction on its new air cargo center, with modern buildings and facilities that will replace the existing center.
   The new cargo terminal, which the airport said will open in summer 2015, will be called the Hamburg Airport Cargo Center.
   “We, the airport, are investing around 45 million euro [$62 million] from our own funds in the modern air freight facilities on Weg beim Jaeger. The money is a good investment for the site and the region. The new HACC will further strengthen the already successful aviation sector in Hamburg, bringing security for the future,” airport chief executive officer Michael Eggenschwiler said in a statement.
   The terminal will include cargo handling halls and offices and allows for an annual capacity of up to 150,000 tons of air freight, the airport said.
   The next step in construction will be excavating a pit for the foundation, so surface construction can begin this summer.
