GSP duty-free petitions due June 18, says trade law firm The U.S. government has set a June 18 deadline for requests to extend duty-free treatment under the Generalized System of Preferences to additional products, according to an e-mail from trade law firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg.
   “GSP offers companies an opportunity to lower their costs for manufacturing inputs and other goods, a particularly attractive option at a time when global prices are on the rise,” ST&R said. “Under GSP, the U.S. provides duty-free treatment to a wide range of products imported from over 100 developing and lesser-developed countries. Each year the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative solicits petitions seeking to expand GSP coverage to goods not already eligible. For 2008, those petitions are due by June 18. Petitions must be accompanied by substantial supporting documentation, including a variety of economic and commercial information, and filed under a strict deadline.”
