Canadian government requests essential rail services review    The Canadian National Railway Co. said Monday the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has been asked by the Canadian government to evaluate if specific rail services should be maintained in the event of industrial action.
   The essential services review was requested by Joe Fontana, Minister of Labor. Until the CIRB completes its review, any right to strike or lockout is suspended. After the board’s determination, at least 72 hours notice would be required prior to any legal strike or lockout.
   During the CIRB determination process, Canadian National will continue to bargain in Canada with the United Transportation Union, Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
   “The company remains optimistic settlements can be reached without labor disruption,” Canadian National said in a statement.
