Long Beach posts January increase of 35% for TEUs    The port of Long Beach has continued to record growth in its box traffic, with a 35-percent jump in volumes to 509,597 TEUs in January, while neighboring Los Angeles suffered a decline in its box traffic in the same month.
   Inbound TEUs through Long Beach in January totaled 252,785 up 25 percent. Outbound TEUs totaled 81,580, up 12 percent. Empty containers jumped 71 percent to 175,232 TEUs.
   The port of Los Angeles reported earlier this week a 4-percent fall in its box throughput to 590,178 TEUs in January, including a 12 percent fall in inbound traffic to 298,435 TEUs.
   The overall inbound loaded traffic of the two Southern California ports rose 2 percent to 551,220 TEUs in January, suggesting a slow start of the year in the eastbound Pacific trade. However, their combined box traffic, including empties and outbound loaded boxes, increased 11 percent to 1.1 million TEUs, due to a higher proportion of empty containers handled.
