AIIS: U.S. steel imports in March rise 12.8% from February

The United States imported 2.57 million net tons of steel in March, a 12.8 percent increase from February, but a 28.4 percent decline from March 2015, according to figures from the American Institute for International Steel.    The United States imported 2.57 million net tons of steel in March, a 12.8 percent increase from February, but a 28.4 percent decline from March 2015, according to figures from the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS).
   Although U.S. steel imports from Brazil in March were higher year-over-year, U.S. steel imports from Canada, the European Union and South Korea declined from March 2015.
   U.S. steel imports from Brazil surged 7.6 percent year-over-year in March to 342,000 net tons.
   Meanwhile, the U.S. imported 456,000 net tons of steel from Canada and 347,000 net tons of steel from the European Union during the month, year-over-year drops of 13.9 percent and 30.6 percent, respectively. U.S. steel imports from South Korea tumbled 50.3 percent from March 2015 to 279,000 net tons.
   Overall, throughout the first quarter of 2016, the U.S. has imported a total of 7.49 million net tons of steel, a 36.1 percent decline from the corresponding period in 2015.
