CANADIAN FREIGHT CONFERENCES TO RAISE EASTBOUND RATES

CANADIAN FREIGHT CONFERENCES TO RAISE EASTBOUND RATES    Carriers of the Canada U.K. Freight Conference and the Canadian Continental Eastbound Freight Conference said Monday they would initiate a 'freight rate restoration program' on eastbound rates, effective April 1 and Oct. 1.”
   On April 1, the conferences will increase general cargo rates by $50 for a 20-foot container and $75 for a 40-foot container. Refrigerated cargo rates will increase $75 for a 20-foot container and $100 for a 40-foot container.
   The Oct. 1 increase will be announced later, the conferences said.
   Earlier this month, the conference carriers notified shippers of a plan to increase westbound rates by $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot box, also effective April 1.
   Carriers of the Canada/North Europe conferences are Atlantic Container Line, Canada Maritime, Cast, Hapag-Lloyd and Orient Overseas Container Line.
   The Trans-Atlantic Conference Agreement also said member carriers would implement increases in tariff rates of $400 per 20-foot container, $500 per 40-footer and $25 per weight measure, effective April 1.
