K+N helps pharma shipper cut emissions

   The pharmaceutical company Roche has awarded logistics contracts in Greece to Swiss freight forwarder Kuehne + Nagel.
   K+N transports temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products for Roche, and usually these products are transported by air freight even over relatively short distances.
   For its business in Greece, however, the drug company sought a more environmentally-friendly alternative that would reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Now its product will be transported using KN PharmaChain, a Europe-wide overland transport service that K+N said uses state-of-the art refrigerated trailers which permit exact temperature control and efficient double-stack loading. The service also eliminates the need for passive temperature control packing.
   K+N said the changes allowed an 85-percent reduction in CO2 emissions. The remaining CO2 is offset by myclimate, a program which is financed with a one-time payment by K+N.
