Hayden, D.C. maritime leader, dies

Hayden, D.C. maritime leader, dies Capt. Francis T. 'Frank' Hayden, director of Washington Maritime Shipping Corp., died Sunday. He was 87 years old.
   Hayden was born on June 17, 1921 and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.
   During World War II, he served as a U.S. Merchant Marine Academy cadet on board the Liberty ship William M. Pendleton off the French coast during the D-Day Invasion. He graduated from the academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1945.
   In 1958, Hayden joined the U.S. Military Sealift Command. He oversaw the charters of more than 700 ships in support of the Vietnam War. Other career highlights at the Military Sealift Command include negotiating the purchase of three troop support vessels from the British Royal Naval Fleet Auxiliary Fleet in 1982 and brokering the sale of 21 commercial vessels to the U.S. Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Fleet. He retired from the command as director of chartering in 1983.
   After the Military Sealift Command, Hayden became executive vice president of Washington Maritime Shipping Corp., a Washington-based firm active in Military Sealift Command vessel chartering and U.S. Agency for International Development food-aid ship brokerage. He later assumed the role of company director, a position he held until his death.
   Throughout his career, Hayden maintained his unlimited master mariner license from the U.S. Coast Guard.
   Hayden will also be remembered as an advocate for the U.S. maritime industry in Washington.
   'He was a real gentleman and knew the industry very well,' said Capt. James McNamara, president of the New York-based National Cargo Bureau. 'He will be surely missed.'
   Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home (3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.) in Bethesda, Md., followed by a funeral mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church in Bethesda and burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md., on Wednesday.
   He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and sons Kenneth, Jeff and Warren, and their families.
