The 50,400 deadweight ton ships will be constructed by the Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., in Nagasaki, Japan.
MarAd’s grant of approval under Section 615 of the Merchant Marine Act means the ships will be eligible to immediately carry government preference cargo. Unless approval is granted, ships built abroad must wait three years to carry government-propelled cargoes.
Delivery dates and construction costs were not disclosed.
