Deloitte: Transportation becomes more about bytes than hard infrastructure

Consulting firm aggregates research on transportation trends, mostly focused around passenger impacts, as part of wider initiative on the future of government.    The turn of a new year is always rife with recaps and predictions, and this end of December is no different.
   One interesting place to turn for some tea leaf reading is a new website assembled by Deloitte on the future of transportation.
   The site mostly focuses on what the consulting firm sees happening in the passenger transportation realm – everything from self-service airports to drivers tied together in a veritable “internet of cars.” But the predictions invariably will have some knock-on effect for freight transportation.
   For one, people and cargo share many of the same transport corridors, if not the same vehicles (as on airplanes). But, just as likely, innovations in one sector often spill into the other.
   The transportation trends and predictions are part of a larger Deloitte initiative, called Gov2020, that aggregates the company’s global research and expertise “to start a discussion on what is probable, and even more importantly, what is possible.”
