U.S. transportation and logistics job growth continues in January

Transportation and logistics companies added 11,100 jobs for the month following a revised 11,600-job gain in December 2017, according to recent preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Labor.    U.S. transportation and logistics companies added 11,100 jobs in January, according to the latest preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
   The growth followed a revised gain of 11,600 jobs in December 2017.
   Job gains in the sector during January were led by the warehousing and storage segment, which added 5,300 jobs from the previous month, followed by the couriers and messengers segment, which grew by 4,900 jobs, and the support activities for transportation segment, which was up 2,800 positions. In addition, the truck and rail transportation segments grew employment by 2,200 and 1,300 jobs, respectively, from the prior month.
   Those increases were offset by a 2,500-job decline in the transit and ground passenger transportation segment, a 1,200-job loss in the scenic and sightseeing transportation segment, and respective decreases of 800, 600 and 300 jobs in the water, air and pipeline transportation segments.
   Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 200,000 in January compared with the previous month, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent, according to BLS.
