Samsung develops ‘transparent’ safety truck

The South Korean electronics company designed the prototype vehicle with the aim of improving safety and reducing accidents that are the result of impaired visibility caused by the size of truck trailers.    South Korean electronics company Samsung has developed a new “transparent” safety truck using existing technology in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents cause by motorists being unable to see past a semi-trailer truck.
Samsung’s “Safety Truck” utilizes a wireless camera attached to the front of the truck that transmits the images it collects in real time to four exterior monitors located on the back of the truck. The idea is that drivers stuck will be able to see what’s going on ahead of the truck and, therefore, be able to make safer decisions about when to pass.
The company said in a recent post on its blog Samsung Tomorrow that the Safety Truck may also reduce the risk of accidents caused by sudden braking or animals crossing the road since motorists will be able to see these things coming.
Samsung said it developed and tested the prototype truck with a B2B client in Argentina, an area the company noted has a rate of traffic accidents that is among the highest in the world, “with most of these accidents occurring on two-lane roads and particularly in situations of overtaking.”
Although the prototype truck is no longer operational, Samsung said its tests “confirm that the technology works and that this idea can definitely save the lives of many people.” In order to move forward with the project, Samsung said it will work with governments and safe-driving NGOs to “perform the corresponding tests in order to comply with the existing national protocols and obtain the necessary permits and approvals.”
