VARRONE TO HEAD CUSTOMS? OFFICE OF INVESTIGATIONS

VARRONE TO HEAD CUSTOMSÆ OFFICE OF INVESTIGATIONS    U.S. Customs has appointed John C. Varrone to assistant commissioner of the Office of Investigations.
   In this position, Varrone, 43, will manage the professional law enforcement arm of Customs, which investigates violations of agency and border-related rules. He will also manage all of U.S. Customs’ overseas operations; air and marine operations, intelligence units and communication centers. He replaced Bonni G. Tischler who recently took over as Customs’ Office of Field Operations.
   The Office of Investigations, which has a budget of $762 million and 4,300 employees in 142 domestic and 23 overseas offices, investigates large illegal drug smuggling and money laundering operations. It’s also involved in fighting terrorism, illegal arms and technology transfers, and cybercrimes.
   Prior to his appointment, Varrone served in Washington as Customs’ acting deputy assistant commissioner of investigations and executive director of domestic operations on the East Coast and Caribbean. He has also worked in other headquarters and field management positions during his 23-year career with Customs.
