Port of Incheon experiences surge in box volumes

The Korean port’s increase in container volumes resulted from the Hanjin Incheon Container Terminal opening this year, Incheon Port Authority (IPA) President Yoo Chang-kuen said.    The Port of Incheon handled 1.2 million TEUs during the first half of 2016, an 8.8 percent increase from the corresponding period in 2015, the Incheon Port Authority (IPA) said.
Container imports totaled 638,310 TEUs, followed by container exports at 587,519 TEUs, transshipment volumes at 7,220 TEUs and coastal transportation volumes at 4,800 TEUs.
Meanwhile, bulk volumes jumped 4.8 percent year-over-year to 60.99 million tons.
“The Hanjin Incheon Container Terminal (HJIT) opened this year in Incheon New Port, leading to a high rise in the container shipments,” IPA President Yoo Chang-kuen said. “In particular, the growth of shipment volume in July soared, which is likely to drive the shipment to reach 1.5 million TEUs early August. The container shipments handled in Incheon Port will see a sustained growth since the sequential full-opening of Incheon New Port is scheduled next January.”
