Hamburg-Russia trade grows with WTO accession

   The Port of Hamburg noted Monday that its volume to and from Russia has grown in the wake of Russia’s accession last year to the World Trade Organization.
   Russia is the German port’s second-largest trading partner, with 675,000 TEUs of volume handled between Hamburg and Russian ports in 2012, a 13.3 percent increase.
   “We’re particularly pleased that Hamburg managed to raise its share of container traffic in St. Petersburg to 25.3 per cent last year,” said Axel Mattern, executive board member of Port of Hamburg Marketing, in a statement. “That’s 1.6 percentage points more than in 2011.”
   Nearly 95 percent of the total direct traffic between Russia and Hamburg is handled via St. Petersburg, Russia’s so-called “window to Europe.”
   The largest commodity types exported from Russia in containers via Hamburg include hard coal, oil, paper, copper and chemical substances. Top imports to Russia are meat, motor vehicles, fruit preserves, electrical appliances, and paper. – Eric Johnson
