Washington Notebook: ITC approves antidumping probe of alloy imports

   The six members of the U.S. International Trade Commission unanimously voted to instruct the Department of Commerce to continue its antidumping investigation of ferrosilicon from Russia and Venezuela, saying there is reasonable evidence so far that the products are being sold in the United States at less than fair value.
   Ferrosilicon is an alloy of silicon and iron, used as an additive in steelmaking and the production of iron castings.
   The Commerce Department’s preliminary determinations on appropriate antidumping duties on these imports is due by the end of the year.
   The antidumping complaints were brought to the ITC by Globe Specialty Metals of New York City, CC Metals and Alloys in Calvert City, Ky., and two unions. 
   Imports of ferrosilicon from Russia and China totaled $198.5 million in 2012. China and Canada are the other primary sources of the alloy. – Eric Kulisch
