Maersk expands “no show” charge

Maersk said it will begin charging a $100 “no show” fee to customers who book space on ships on one of its services from South China to the Middle East but then fail to show up with cargo.
Maersk on one of its service from the United States announced a similar charge in late March for shippers, but the charge was only $10 per container.
The Danish carrier said the new charge will apply to shippers on its Far East/Middle East (FM1) service beginning May 6.
It described the charge as a pilot project. “One of the key challenges in our industry is the effective management of booking falldown,' or confirmed bookings that never materialize, Maerks said.
The charge will apply if the customer fails to deliver booked and confirmed containers by the gate in time for the confirmed vessel. It also applies if a shipper provides less than 48 hours notice and reduces the quantity of booked and confirmed containers, reschedules shipment to another vessel, or cancels a booking.
The company said the scope of the charge is on the FM1 service loading out of Hong Kong, Da Chan Bay and Yantian ports in China and discharging at Dammam, Saudi Arabia; Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates and Bandar Abbas, Iran.
