OOCL Q1 volume and revenue fall slightly

Hong Kong-based liner carrier saw volume fall across all trades except for Asia-Europe, while revenue declined 3.2 percent amid tough operating environment.    Container volume and revenues fell year-over-year in the first quarter for the liner carrier OOCL, according to an operational update released by the carrier Friday.
   Total container volume fell 2.5 percent in the quarter, to 1.3 million TEUs, while revenues fell 3.2 percent to $1.3 billion. OOCL’s volumes fell 5.5 percent in the transpacific trade, 7 percent in the transatlantic, and 3.3 percent in the intra-Asia trade. Volumes rose 6 percent in the Asia-Europe trade. The intra-Asia trade is OOCL’s largest, accounting for more than 53 percent of the carrier’s volume.
   Revenues fell between 1.9 percent and 4.8 percent across all four trades. OOCL does not release profitability figures in its quarterly updates.
   “With a decrease of 1.6 percent in loadable capacity, the overall load factor was 0.7 percent lower than the same period in 2014,” OOCL said. “Overall average revenue per TEU decreased by 0.7 percent compared to the first quarter of last year.”
