Drayage truckers are protesting against a parking fee the port authority is charging for containers that sit more than six hours in the port area. The fee is 15 rupees (30 cents) per hour for 40-foot container and 10 rupees (20 cents) per hour for 20-footers. According to the Hindu Business Line, the port recently opened a container truck parking area, but a union representative of area truckers said the fee for that lot was considered excessive and left truckers with no other option but to park in the port area. The union rep also said six hours wasn’t enough time to complete unloading and loading procedures in the terminal.
The strike in Cochin is unaffiliated with a nationwide strike by members of the All India Motor Transport Congress, which has on strike since Monday over high diesel and tire prices.
