U.S. CUSTOMS EXTENDS COMMENT PERIOD ON PROPOSED SPLIT SHIPMENT RULE    U.S. Customs has given the shipping industry more time to comment on a proposed rule which would allow an importer, under certain conditions, to submit a single entry to cover shipments split up by the carrier.
   The original comment deadline closed on Jan. 15. Customs said it had received a request from a customs broker to extend the comment period, and stated that “this request has merit.”
   Customs has set the new comment deadline for its proposed split shipment rule for Feb. 14. “It should be noted that no further extension of the comment period beyond this additional period will be granted,” the agency said.
   The proposed amendments regarding split shipments would apply to the import entry laws through the Tariff Suspension and Trade Act of 2000.
