Long Beach, Los Angeles traffic 40% up in October    The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles both achieved over 40 percent container throughput growth in October, as the peak season came to a close, when comparing monthly traffic volumes with the same month in 2002.
   The October total for Long Beach was 437,000 TEUs, up 45 percent, while Los Angeles totaled 671,000 TEUs, a gain of 42 percent.
   Inbound loaded containers at Long Beach was up 41 percent in October, to 238,000 TEUs, and inbound cargo traffic at Los Angeles jumped 44 percent, to 365,000 TEUs.
   Outbound loaded containers at Long Beach rose by 109 percent in October, reaching 85,000 TEUs. Los Angeles also experienced a surge in outbound traffic, with a 34-percent rise in volume, to 94,000 TEUs.
   Long Beach’s October total for all loaded containers was 315,000 TEUs, up 54 percent. Los Angeles’ total of all loaded containers grew 42 percent to 459,000 TEUs.
   The ports’ overall growth in the year-to-date period has been more modest. Los Angeles handled 6 million TEUs in the first 10 months of the year, up 20 percent when compared with the same period of 2002. Long Beach saw its traffic fall marginally over the same period, to 3.8 million TEUs.
