The Coast Guard closed the waterway after about 10,500 gallons of oil was spilled by the tanker Chemical Supplier after it struck a barge Friday night while trying to turnaround in the vicinity of Brady’s Island near Interstate 610.
The channel, which was closed between Old Manchester Dock Three and City Dock 27, is now open to all daylight operations and limited nighttime barge operations.
Captain of the Port Capt. Marcus Woodring determined the oil is contained along the shoreline, making it safe to resume traffic flow through the affected area at a slow speed. Responders will continue to work to recover the remaining oil in the area.
