Cochin port delayed but to open in 2010    India’s first publicly owned container port capable of handling post-Panamax vessels, originally due to open in early 2010, now looks set to open at the end of the year, according to a report this week in the Indian newspaper the Economic Times.
   The port, in Cochin in southwestern India, is managed by DP World and will give access to large containerships that so far can only call one other port in the country, the privately owned and operated Mundra Port in the western state of Gujarat.
   The new complex, called the International Container Transshipment Terminal, aims to increase India’s share of direct services that call at Singapore and Colombo and connect to India via feeders.
   The first phase of the terminal, the part due to open this year, will have capacity for 1 million TEUs with space to scale the terminal up to 3 million TEUs of capacity if demand necessitates.
