Jacksonville port sets container record
The Jacksonville Port Authority said it moved a record 826,580 TEUs in its fiscal year ending Sept. 30, a 10 percent increase over the prior year.
The port also handled nearly 519,000 vehicles, a 24 percent increase from last year. It said it remains the No. 2 vehicle-handling port in the nation. Baltimore has been the leading roll-on/roll-off port for a number of years.
The port's tonnage also increased 10 percent this year, with 8.1 million tons moved. Breakbulk cargoes (paper, steel) jumped 28 percent over last year to 990,000 tons. Bulk cargoes (limestone and other aggregates) remain impacted by the economic downturn with 1.5 million tons moved through JAXPORT, an 11 percent decrease.
Unaudited financial statements show the port's 10th consecutive year of operating revenue growth. Revenues reached a record $51.2 million, a 6 percent increase over the record $48.4 million achieved in fiscal year 2009.
Also in the latest fiscal year, 173,568 cruise passengers embarked on 72 voyages departing the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal, down slightly from 2009 due to a 30-day renovation of the Carnival Fascination. The Fascination sails year-round from Jacksonville.
