Vanguard Logistics goes mobile    Non-vessel-operating common carrier Vanguard Logistics Services said it's planning the launch of a mobile version of its systems platform for its freight forwarder customers.
   The service will consist of a 'bundle' of applications that will run on the most significant mobile platforms currently on the market, including Apple's iPad and various other devices such as the Motorola Xoom and the Galaxy Tab.
   In addition, the Carson, Calif.-based NVO has developed a strategy which includes the distribution of enabling hardware and development of relationships with network carriers to make it easier for customers to adopt the technology for their own use, explained Charles Brennan, Vanguard's global chief executive officer.

   Vanguard executives said the timing of the company's mobile applications is in line with new product announcements made by various technology firms and wireless providers.

   'Our primary focus is on the customer, making it easier for them to do business with us and easier for them to acquire new business for themselves,' said Biju Kewalram, chief operations officer for Vanguard. 'We want to provide the accessibility needed for our customers to take advantage of market changes outside their control.'

   'The new frontiers represented by emerging technology mean that we need to continue to try new things, continue to push the envelope and continue to take risks, altering our strategies as markets change,' added Owen Glenn, Vanguard's founder and executive chairman, in a statement.
   Vanguard has also put together an implementation schedule that will first involve collaboration with some of its largest customers before making the mobile platform available for general release.
