Police recover trailers after $155K Guinness heist, but 880 barrels remain missing

Police recovered two stolen trailers about 30 miles from Runcorn, England, but their Guinness cargo remains missing. Investigators now place the haul at approximately 880 barrels worth £115,000, or about $155,000. Lancashire Constabulary located both units around Lathom in Skelmersdale. Cheshire Constabulary has announced no arrests.

Investigators determined someone left the first trailer near Hall Lane around 3:05 a.m. Tuesday. Evidence placed the second near Gillibrands Road at approximately 12:07 p.m. Wednesday. The truck hauling that equipment reportedly pulled out in front of a silver or white Renault Captur. A student driver operated the vehicle with a driving instructor present.

Police seek student driver and possible buyers

Detectives want to speak with both Renault occupants about the encounter. Officers also seek Skelmersdale residents who noticed suspicious activity around either location. Businesses should report unexpected offers involving bulk Guinness purchases. Authorities believe criminals may try selling the missing beer through the black market.

Detective Sergeant McClatchey welcomed the trailer recovery while stressing that the search continues. “These kegs are stolen goods that are being sold on by black market criminals,” McClatchey said. Investigators urged anyone questioning a seller’s source to contact authorities. Tipsters can call 101 and reference incident number IML-2408641.

Heist began with two rapid pickups

The theft began Aug. 31 at an industrial estate along Aston Lane. One truck reached the property around 7:45 p.m. Its driver connected to a loaded trailer and departed 10 minutes later. The vehicle traveled toward the Mersey Gateway.

Another truck arrived at 9:12 p.m. and left around 9:30 toward Rainhill and Watkinson Way. Both trailers carried Guinness and displayed GXO branding. Police originally estimated all stolen property at £205,000, or approximately $277,000. The beer alone accounted for £115,000, or about $155,000.

Although the trailers displayed GXO branding, neither fell under its control, management or supervision during the theft. Authorities have not identified either driver. Investigators described one as white with a short, dark beard and beanie; the other wore a cap. The public release does not identify the incoming trucks, their owners or the drivers’ access method.

Why It Matters

This case shows why finding equipment does not mean recovering its cargo. Stolen freight can enter resale channels before investigators locate an abandoned trailer.
