Freight Tech Isn’t Dead – It’s Getting Picked Apart More Than Ever

TitletownTech, the early-stage venture fund launched in 2019 as a partnership between the Green Bay Packers and Microsoft, has built a portfolio of roughly 80 investments — 35 currently active — with seven focused on supply chain and mobility, according to co-managing director and co-founder of Breakthrough Fuel. About 20% of total investments have already failed, and the fund’s read on why has shifted sharply.

“My answer’s changed dramatically in the last five years,” the TitletownTech co-managing partner said. While poor market timing and weak product-market fit still account for failures, the most surprising pattern has been interpersonal breakdown among co-founders. The fund now probes founder relationships — when they last fought and how they resolve conflict — more than complementary skill sets, because dysfunctional co-founder dynamics have emerged as the greater predictor of collapse.

The fund, which has raised over $100 million, invests from pre-seed through Series A — including pre-revenue, pre-product companies — across supply chain, manufacturing, energy, and health. Its standout supply chain bet is Genlogs, which the fund backed before the company had revenue or a product. The founders’ pitch opened with the line: “We used to track terrorists. Now we track trucks.” Titletown was drawn not by the line itself but by the founders’ unconventional thinking and the premise of a broad intelligence layer sitting above existing, often biased or incomplete freight datasets.

The Peloton truck-platooning startup — not the fitness equipment company — illustrates the fund’s harder lessons. Titletown invested in the concept of digitally linking two trucks to cut fuel costs and eventually double asset utilization by allowing the trailing driver to go off duty. The company failed not because the technology was unsound but because a brake manufacturer declined to certify the trailing truck’s brakes, blocking insurance coverage. “They used a legitimate method to block the progress,” the co-managing partner said.

On what separates freight founders from other entrepreneurs, the fund’s view is direct: trucking produces operators who problem-solve in real time and execute under pressure. “If you don’t innovate, you might die slowly, but if you don’t execute, you’re gonna die quickly,” the co-managing partner said, drawing on his own background running Paper Transport, which he grew from roughly 80 trucks to about 850 before exiting, with 90% of the business now in dedicated carriage.

Looking further out, the co-managing partner flagged quantum computing as an underappreciated near-term opportunity for supply chain optimization — citing the classical traveling-salesman problem as a use case where quantum advantage could materialize early. Most observers, he noted, do not put quantum and supply chain in the same sentence, but the industry’s long history of adopting difficult technology early makes it a natural proving ground.

Titletown’s geographic thesis centers on Green Bay itself: proximity to Midwest freight flows, access to truck, rail, and Great Lakes harbor infrastructure, a deep concentration of transportation talent traceable to carriers such as Schneider, and an informed local investor base. The fund operates adjacent to Lambeau Field under a structure unique in professional sports — the Packers have 504,000 community shareholders, giving the team a different accountability to the region than a privately owned franchise.
