18th U.S.-flag ship exits Suisan Bay for scrapping

The SS President will be towed from the U.S. Maritime Administration's Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in California on Tuesday for scrapping.

This will be the 18th ship to leave the Suisun Bay site since October 2009, when the Obama administration announced an effort to clean up the location and improve the surrounding environment. The departure of the President leaves 39 remaining ships to be removed from the fleet, MarAd said.

The ship will be towed to the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif., for recycling by Allied Defense Recycling Co.

The President was a breakbulk cargo vessel built in 1961 by Bethlehem Steel in San Francisco. It entered the reserve fleet at the end of its active service in 1979.
