Campbell Soup Co. and its subsidiaries revamped its supply chain network to handle a significant increase in demand for its soup and snack products as more consumers increased their at-home food purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company said its distribution costs decreased in 2020 “due to a decline in transportation and logistics costs, driven by excess availability, warehousing efficiencies and lower fuel costs,” according to its 2020 annual report. However, Campbell’s also stated that it has “experienced a recent increase in transportation and logistics costs.”  

Campbell’s stated it expects supply pressures to continue throughout 2021 to source certain ingredients and packaging, including steel, aluminum, glass, agricultural products, proteins and other commodities, because of the pandemic. 

Since the outset of the pandemic, Campbell’s said its top priorities included taking care of employees; producing and distributing products as safely and quickly as possible for customers, consumers and communities across North America; and anticipating and planning for the future. 

The company also launched new commitments to reduce packaging waste by increasing circularity — keeping materials in use and out of landfills. It committed to transitioning 100% of packaging to recyclable or industrially compostable materials and designs by 2030.
