5 Md. lawmakers oppose proposed LNG terminal at Sparrows Point

5 Md. lawmakers oppose proposed LNG terminal at Sparrows Point In a letter late last week to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Joseph T. Kelliher, five Democratic Maryland lawmakers blasted the agency's recently released environmental impact statement favoring the construction of the proposed AES Sparrows Point LNG and Mid-Atlantic Express terminal and pipeline.
'You have once again decided to ignore our safety, security and environmental concerns about this proposed facility,' the lawmakers told FERC in the April 29 letter. 'You also have chosen to ignore the concerns of the State of Maryland, and Baltimore Country.'
The letter was signed by U.S. Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Benjamin Cardin, and U.S. Reps. Elijah Cummings, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, and John Sarbanes.
If the Sparrows Point application is approved, liquefied natural gas tankers would have to travel through the narrowest portions of Chesapeake Bay and under the Bay Bridge en route to the mouth of the Port of Baltimore.
The Maryland lawmakers vowed to fight the proposed LNG terminal and pipeline no matter how favorable it's viewed by FERC.
'You can continue to rubberstamp AES Sparrow Point's application through the FERC review process, but without the support of the State of Maryland, this project will not move forward,' the lawmakers said.
