78 senators urge water resources legislation floor action

Seventy-eight senators submitted a letter to the senate leadership Tuesday requesting that the Water Resources Development Act receive floor action at the start of this congressional session.

The National Waterways Alliance lobbied the senators to sign the letter, which was sent to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

“Recent hurricanes and severe storms have taught the nation a tragic lesson: maintain and improve our aging flood control and water resources infrastructure or risk the ruin and destruction to our community,” the letter said.

The Water Resources Development Act (S.728) “moves us in the right direction toward addressing and preventing these grave threats to public safety,” the letter added.

It has been five years since Congress has enacted a Water Resources Development Act into law.
