9 dead in Christmas ship fire
Nine people were killed and another five were injured in a Christmas day fire that broke out on board the Greek-owned freighter Aegean Wind.
Press reports said the ship was carrying a load of steel from Brazil to Houston when the fire started about 90 miles off Venezuela.
It’s not clear what caused the fire, but various reports said it either began in the engine room or mess hall.
The 1983-built ship is operated by Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management of Piraeus.
