AAFA praises renewal of Burma import ban

The American Apparel & Footwear Association has lauded U.S. Congress members for renewing for three years the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003, which bans imports from Burma.

Both chambers approved the renewal last week and the legislation will be sent to President Barack Obama for his signature.

'The U.S. apparel and footwear industry strongly stands behind the commitment the United States made in support of human rights,' said Kevin M. Burke, AAFA president and chief executive officer. 'These sanctions are justified by the countless atrocities committed against the Burmese people everyday. I urge President Obama to sign this legislation immediately before the current ban expires to send a clear message that the United States does not do business with tyrannical dictators and regimes.'
