Ag group praises Long Beach expansion plan

   A group of agriculture exporters and importers expressed support for the proposed Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project.
   In a letter to Mayor Bob Foster and the city council urging approval of the expansion, the Agriculture Transportation Coalition said the project “will have a direct and positive impact on U.S. agriculture and forest products' competitiveness in the global marketplace.”
   “U.S. agriculture depends on ports' remaining competitive so we can remain competitive,” said the letter from Peter Friedmann, the group’s executive director.
   “Modernizing old and outdated terminals to meet today's economic and environmental standards is essential. Port of Long Beach terminals must be modernized to stay competitive. The Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project provides this opportunity, and not a moment too soon.
   “We strongly urge the City Council to approve the Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project so that construction can begin promptly,” Friedmann said.
