Aker begins work on sixth tanker
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has begun construction on the sixth in a series of 16 Jones Act product tankers it is building for charter to Overseas Shipholding Group.
The company has delivered two of the 46,000 dwt product tankers to OSG and others are in various stages of production.
On Saturday, it flooded the dry dock where the third tanker was under construction in preparation for moving it to a nearby outfitting dock where testing and commissioning of the ship will begin.
The ships are owned by a sister company of the shipyard, American Shipping Corp., and bareboat chartered to OSG.
OSG originally agreed to charter 10 of the tankers, and in February signed an agreement in principal to charter six more.
