Alumina shipments from Jamaica resume

Alumina shipments from Jamaica resume Alcoa is once again shipping alumina from its Jamalco operations at Rock Point, Jamaica, which was damaged in August by Hurricane Dean.
   A Reuters news service report said partial production at the facility started on Aug. 30, but damage to port facilities prevented the resumption of shipments until last week.
   'Jamalco began its loading activities at the port last week,' company spokesman Kevin Lowery told Reuters. 'They began loading alumina at the Rocky Point port. That was completed and that shipment is underway.'
   Jamalco is a joint venture between Alcoa and the Jamaican government. Jamalco has its own terminal at Rocky Point. Jamalco has an alumina refinery with a capacity of 1.4 million tons a year.
   Lowery said that because it was not possible to ship alumina and the operation has limited storage capacity, the facility has not been operating at normal levels until the port was repaired.
