Analyst says Saia going strong, but has room to improve

Saia achieved record load averages in January and February despite weak seasonal tonnage, according to an analysis by Stifel Nicolaus.
The less-than-truckload company has placed logistics post trailers into its arsenal, and this is helping boost capacity by 20 percent on linehaul runs, the analyst said.
As load averages improve, the company is also targeting fuel efficiency, pricing improvements, better inspection measures and linehual optimization. Saia’s management has pledged to generate $20 million in savings this year stemming from these changes.
Even with the company’s current growth, officials would like to see Saia’s operating ratio improve, Stifel Nicolaus analysts said.
